Overview

Since I began practice at the Bar I have acted in a wide variety of commercial cases. My main areas of specialisation are information technology (in particular IT project disputes), building and engineering, professional negligence and banking. I am also instructed in cases concerning commercial fraud, company law, employment, insurance, oil and gas, sale of goods and international trade, arbitration and ADR.

Experience in Information Technology
I acted for a period as the Chambers Network Administrator, and have experience of programming for both Microsoft Windows and Linux (e.g. MS Office, MS Access, MS Visual Basic, HTML, Perl, Javascript, e-mail). I wrote the software for the Chambers’ Library bar-coding system, and set up and for a period maintained the Chambers web site.
I am a Trustee of the British and Irish Legal Information Institute (www.bailii.org), and wrote the software for converting judgments to HTML for the BAILII web site.

Arbitration and expert determination experience

As Arbitrator:
Appointments as sole arbitrator by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (award issued in one case) and by the British Computer Society
Ad hoc appointment as sole arbitrator for an arbitration concerning interpretation of a commercial contract (award issued following oral hearing with witnesses) Appointment by one of parties in dispute regarding software licensing
As Expert:
Two Early Neutral Evaluations carried out for CEDR TECBAR Approved Adjudicator
As Counsel:
Defects in a petrochemical plant (ICC, hearings lasted over 3 months, claim of $32 million)
Insurance claim following an oil refinery explosion (claim of $150 million, 2 weeks)
Directors and officers insurance for a failed US Savings Bank (claim of $60 million, 2 weeks)
Oil and gas joint venture (ICC, claim in excess of $1 billion, 2 weeks)
Commercial dispute involving a former Soviet Republic
Dispute concerning electronic instrumentation in a process plant
Several building contract arbitrations in UK
Advising in a number of cases on whether an expert determination can be challenged, and in some cases instructed in proceedings to determine this point (eg Halifax Life Ltd v The Equitable Life Assurance Society [2007] 1 Lloyd's Rep 528).
